Alex and her Slingshot of Doom
Teenagers are rebellious little creatures, aren’t they? And Alex Rousseau is no exception. The adults tell her she’s not supposed to be “here,” maybe suggesting that she and the other young’uns live on the original island in that little village in the middle of the jungle. Armed with a slingshot, she demands answers about her missing boyfriend, Karl.
Poor Karl. We haven’t seen him since he apologized to Sawyer for involving him in his escape attempt from the bear cage. Alex thinks they killed him. Would they really kill one of their own young people for something like that? Or maybe it wasn’t just for the escape attempt, but for whatever he did to get put in the cage in the first place?
Alex is a real wildcard. She’s obviously very different from those who raised her. I’ve seen it suggested that everything she’s done so far - warning Kate, helping Claire escape the medical hatch - was all a farce, and that she’s in on the convoluted mind games the Others are playing on the castaways. I don’t buy that. I think she’s being sincere. She’s 16 or 17, she’s hormonal, and she has reason to believe her boyfriend was murdered. A slingshot massacre makes perfect sense.
Alex wanted to talk to Ben. Ben wanted to know if Alex asked about him. What’s the connection?
Some people seem to think that Ben could be her father. I don’t think that’s it. Danielle was very pregnant when she got shipwrecked on the island. Father figure? That’s a possibility. Maybe Alex went to Ben whenever she had a problem when she was growing up. Or maybe she just knows that Ben calls the shots around there, so he would be the one to know exactly what happened to Karl. I like that last idea the best, but it doesn’t explain why Ben thinks Alex would ask about him before he went in for surgery.
I would love to see an Alex-centric episode when LOST returns next year.
